This two-day course run at Earthship Brighton in partnership with Brighton Permaculture Trust is for anyone wanting a comprehensive introduction to building with rammed and chalk, an ancient and low impact form of construction.  The dates in 2010 are:
  • Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th October

This course will cover the basics of rammed earth from the benefits of building with rammed earth and chalk, finding the right earth, choosing a formwork system, construction methods, design detailing and different approaches and the various tools used.  There will be a large practical component to the course, with the construction of a section of rammed earth wall.

The course will be led by Rowland Keeble who runs Ram Cast CIC, a not-for-profit consultancy which trains a range of businesses and individuals in the use of rammed earth. Rowland has worked around the world with this building method since 1985, but also extensively in the UK, with projects at the Eden Project, the WISE Building at CAT and Grand Designs Live The House that Kevin Built.  He co-wrote the book Rammed Earth: design and construction guidelines, has written many articles and has published a national standard for the technology which is now under review for harmonisation by 15 southern African countries.
