This workshop is a walking tour of Stanmer Park. Students will have the opportunity to see evidence of the past and bring local history and heritage to life.
This workshop looks into ancient and recent history of Stanmer Park and its relevance to us today.
An interactive timeline game, a story and the general discussion will help students to relate to and compare the local history of the park to our lives today.
Local history outline
After an introduction, the workshop will move on to an interactive timeline game on the green in front of Stanmer House, a Georgian Grade 1 listed building.
After the game, there is a walking tour of the surrounding area and village, dating back to Anglo Saxon times, will highlight some artefacts like Neolithic stones, the mounds of an Iron Ae village in the horse field as well as Stanmer Church, built in the 6th Century.
A colourful story about one of the famous inhabitants of Stanmer next to his grave stone will end the workshop.

- Patterns of history over time
- The relevance of local history to our day to day lives

The workshop was developed as part of the Stanmer Restoration Project. The project is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the BIG Lottery ‘Parks for People’ scheme, as well as Brighton & Hove City Council, Plumpton College and the South Downs National Park Authority.
